Vinyl Flooring Calculator — How Many Packs Do I Need?
Enter your room dimensions and pack coverage to calculate exactly how many packs of vinyl flooring to order, including waste and leftover from the final pack.
How many packs of vinyl flooring do I need?
Measure room length x width to get the area in m². Add 10% waste for straight lay. Divide by the pack coverage in m² and round up to the nearest whole pack. Never round down.
How much waste should I allow for vinyl flooring?
Use 10% for straight or parallel lay. Use 15% for diagonal lay because angled cuts at walls waste more material. Add an extra 5% for rooms with many obstacles such as kitchen units, a bath or toilet.
What is vinyl flooring pack coverage?
Every pack states the coverage in m² or sq ft on the label. This is the floor area one pack covers when laid. Pack sizes vary by brand, plank width and length - always check your specific pack rather than assuming.
Does vinyl flooring need underlayment?
Most modern vinyl LVT planks have underlayment pre-attached to the underside. Check your pack label - if it says pre-attached underlay or comfort backing you do not need to buy underlayment separately. If not, budget for an additional 10-15% of your floor area in underlayment.
Vinyl flooring calculator for the US
In the US, vinyl flooring is sold by the box in square feet. Use the feet toggle to enter your room in feet and select your box coverage in sq ft from the dropdown or enter it from the box label.
How to measure a room for vinyl flooring
Measure the longest length and widest width including any alcoves. For L-shaped rooms split into two rectangles and add the areas together. Always measure at the widest points - walls are rarely perfectly straight.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how many packs of vinyl flooring I need?
Measure room length x width for the area. Add 10% for waste. Divide by the pack coverage and round up. For example, a 4m x 5m room is 20m². With 10% waste that is 22m². At 2.23m² per pack you need 10 packs.
How much extra vinyl flooring should I buy?
Buy 10% extra for straight lay. Buy 15% extra for diagonal lay. Always round up to whole packs - never buy fewer than the calculator recommends.
Does vinyl LVT need underlay?
Most modern vinyl LVT planks have underlay pre-attached. Check your pack label. If it says pre-attached underlay you do not need to buy it separately. If not, add 10-15% of your floor area in underlay.
What happens to leftover vinyl flooring?
Store leftover packs flat and dry. Use them for future repairs - matching the same batch years later is often impossible, so offcuts are valuable.
